The Right to Education Act 2009 gave every Indian citizen between the age of 6 and 14 the fundamental right to obtain a good quality education. Not just access, an outcome of good quality for every child. Mahatma Jotiba Phule raised the demand for free and compulsory education. Dr Babsaheb Ambedkar wanted it as a constitutional right. This objective was finally achieved by the progressives in the RTE Act of 2009.
The National Education Policy (NEP) seeks to set back the calendar. Serious objections from educationists to NEP were ignored. Without discussion in parliament, grabbing the opportunity given by the pandemic and lockdown, the Modi government is bent on imposing NEP on the country. In simple terms, NEP is a programme for establishing big corporate control on education at all levels. It creates pathways for pushing children out of quality education from class 3 itself in the name of flexibility and offering vocational courses creating a basis for Neo Manuvad. Online and virtual education replacing the actual learning is being pushed for the needs of the corporate telecom and data giants.
We cannot allow the downgrading of Indian education to suit the business needs of corporates. To understand this issue we invite you to join the discussions on, ‘NEP 2020: Manujan Hitaay, Manujan Sukhaay!’
