We, Pune Collective and Shankar Brahme Samaj Vigyan Granthalaya, invite you to our first in-person event on Saturday 26th August, at 5.30 pm at Shankar Brahme Granthalaya’s, Lokayat Hall.
MANIPURAYAN
Main Speaker: Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty
(National Affairs Editor, The Wire)
The current situation in Manipur mirrors a distressing repetition of age-old violence against women, concealed within the patriarchal frameworks of the local communities and socio-political dynamics in India. Despite the deeply alarming nature of the circumstances in Manipur, there has been a notable lack of recognition, and only a few instances of public outcry and protest have emerged from the rest of India. This, in itself, raises concerns. Even the national media started to report on the situation only after graphic videos depicting atrocities against women came to light. This prompts us to question whether dominant news networks are primarily drawn to the sensational aspects of such incidents, a trend that could undermine the democratic pursuit of justice in India.
It is crucial to contextualize this specific incident within the broader landscape of Manipur’s current state. In recent months alone, hundreds of lives have been lost, and thousands of individuals have been displaced, as the situation continues to deteriorate with no apparent resolution in sight. Understanding the underlying reasons necessitates collective efforts to comprehend the intricate complexity at play.
It would be a mistake to assume that those of us in Maharashtra are distant from Manipur and thus unaffected by the situation and its repercussions. In Maharashtra, we must remain vigilant to any potential attempt to disrupt harmonious relations between various Adivasi communities and other groups based on religious differences. It is imperative to actively safeguard the unity among diverse communities.
The session, led by Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, will be complemented by the expertise of Prof. Maya Pandit, a feminist activist, writer, and linguist, as the chairperson. The moderation will be carried out by Dr. Sanjay Dabhade, a social activist and member of the National Forum for Tribal Rights. The discussions will be conducted in English, Hindi, and Marathi, accommodating a wider linguistic audience.
