We, at Pune Collective, invites you to our tenth program on Saturday, 27th, March 2021.
Decoding Dissent in Democracy!
In the last few years, From violently clamping down on democratically agitating farmers to raiding independent news platforms and filmmakers to arresting activists fighting for the Workers, Adivasis, Dalits, or even for secure climate, the central government is flexing its fascist arms. FIRs are being filed against journalists under the Epidemic Act, Disaster Act, sedition laws. etc. Stand-up comedians have been arrested and intimidated by the State. Sedition that was once used to jail the leaders of our freedom movement has so clearly become a weapon to crush dissent even in India today. In the last five years, the number of sedition cases filed against individuals has risen by an average of at least 28% each year.
It is important to remind those who sit in high office as well as those sitting on the fence today that dissent is not sedition. The Right to Dissent is an integral part of democracy and should be available to and cherished by every citizen of India.
It is against this background that we invite you for “Decoding Dissent in Democracy”.
In this session of the Pune Collective, we will be joined by three towering personalities and activists: Navkiran Natt, Doctor by profession, Filmmaker, an activist and one of the editors of Trolley Times who has become the voice of the farmers throughout the Kisan Andolan; Urmilesh, a senior Journalist, an author, TV anchor, and former executive director at RajyaSabha TV; along with Prof. Gopal Guru, an eminent scholar, author, political scientist, currently editor of the EPW.
